👪 BENEFITTING: DeSoto Cares Homeless Services
The Ride for Tiny Town supports DeSoto Cares Homeless Services and the creation of a community of small homes to transition people from the streets into more traditional housing. These homes will be a low rent living solution and a beacon of hope for many people who are currently homeless.
TINY TOWN UPDATE
We want to assure the community that the plan for Tiny Town is moving forward, although like the initial process it is “tedious and frustratingly slow.” The next phase of building additional housing units will be done in conjunction with DeSoto County BOCC using an available federal funding grant.
The grants department at DeSoto County BOCC is taking the lead role in facilitating and implementing the grant. Their expertise is invaluable in maneuvering the multitude of regulations and details involved with the funding. Much of our initial planning and work had to be updated or expanded to meet the stipulations of the grant.
The past year has been spent providing the detailed satisfaction of the requirements. An engineering firm has been selected and bids are expected to be attained in late summer 2025 for selection of the construction company. Due to grant requirements, all housing units will be ADA compliant; this results in each unit being larger than the original plan. With this change, only eight housing units will be built (rather than the originally planned ten) on the available land.
We are happy to report that the first client has been living in the first home for a year. We are working with him and his Case Manager to coordinate his move to more conventional affordable housing.
Meanwhile he is looking forward to watching over the construction of the additional homes. DeSoto Cares will have full responsibility for furnishing the new units, watch for details on how you can help.
